Memory from Szentendre

By a curious twist of fate, it is every eighteen years—symbolically marking the coming of age—that Szentendre’s distinguished yet ever-renewing artists’ studio arrives in Sfântu Gheorghe.
Even its founding members could hardly have imagined that, more than fifty years later, the studio would still be so remarkably active, regularly presenting group exhibitions. The new leadership of the Vajda Lajos Studio has likewise been driven by a strong commitment to expanding its presence beyond Szentendre, bringing its exhibitions to major cities farther afield. While the younger generation is currently exhibiting in Gothenburg, we often spoke with our former president, János Aknay, about returning to Sfântu Gheorghe—and planned to do so for a third time.
János has since embarked on his final journey. This exhibition is therefore dedicated to his memory and to the works of the artists who were closest to him.

Memory from Szentendre presents reflections by his contemporaries alongside unique works from the Varga–Balogh Collection, offering a selection from János Aknay’s oeuvre spanning the period from 1974 to the present day.
