The Seven Works of Mercy
Rusznák Arthur-Cristian was born in 1995 in Sfântu Gheorghe. He completed his studies over 12 years at the “Plugor Sandor” Art High School in his hometown, until 2014, when his path led him to Timișoara. Here, he finished his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in visual arts, specialising in painting. His works have been exhibited in Timișoara, Pécs and Lisbon, and now also in Sfântu Gheorghe. After 10 years of studies in Timișoara, with two Erasmus mobilities in France in Metz and Portugal in Covilha, the young artist is now presenting his doctoral project in his native land.
The exhibition brings to the forefront seven works inspired by the masterpiece “The Seven Works of Mercy” by the famous painter Caravaggio. In the context of his doctoral research, the young artist tackled the complex issue of originality and the appropriation of images from the past, using classical works as a starting point for his artistic explorations.
Through the intensity and stylistic innovation of his works, Caravaggio awakened in the contemporary artist the most powerful and authentic creative impulses, becoming an inexhaustible source of inspiration. This deep connection is reflected in the current exhibition, where the seven works of mercy are reinterpreted in a modern vision, addressing contemporary themes and current social challenges.
The exhibited works are not simple reproductions of Caravaggio’s pieces but are visual dialogues between the past and the present. Using Caravaggio’s visual language, the contemporary artist explores and questions the realities of today’s world, offering new life and new meaning to classical motifs. Each work becomes a bridge between centuries, demonstrating how the universal themes of mercy and compassion continue to be relevant and profoundly necessary in our modern society.
